Are you experiencing situations where a Hangul document is set to read-only during tasks, making modifications impossible?

Hangul documents can encounter various issues such as sudden inaccessibility, file corruption, or damage.

We provide step-by-step solutions for seven different scenarios, from releasing read-only mode in Hangul documents to restoring, troubleshooting execution errors, and fixing file damage.

Explore many practical recovery methods immediately applicable in emergencies.

Case 1: Releasing Read-Only Mode in Hangul Documents

Releasing Read-Only Mode in Hangul

Releasing the read-only mode in Hangul documents can be done in two ways.

For general Hangul documents, you can change the file properties by [right-clicking the file → Properties → unchecking 'Read-only'].

Distribution format Hangul documents can be configured by [Security Menu → Uncheck Distribution Document Mode → Enter the Set Password → Release].

General Hangul documents can have their read-only mode released immediately without a password. Hangul reports received from public institutions or companies are likely distribution documents.

How to Release Read-Only Mode from File Properties

  1. Right-click the downloaded Hangul file.

  2. Click 'Properties'.

  1. In the 'General' tab, uncheck the 'Read-only' checkbox at the bottom.

  2. Click the 'Apply' button and then 'OK'.

  3. Reopen the file, and the read-only message that appeared at the top will disappear, allowing all editing functions like deletion and text input.

If you wish to make a Hangul report you created into a read-only file, you can check the 'Read-only' option when sharing the file; the recipient won't be able to make modifications.

How to Make an Editable File by Saving as a Different Name

한글 문서 파일 메뉴 다른 이름으로 저장 화면
  1. Open the Hangul file and click 'File' from the top menu.

  2. Select 'Save As'.

  3. Assign a file name and click the 'Save' button.

  4. Opening the newly saved file will complete the release of the read-only mode, enabling edits.

If the Hangul document still can't be edited despite following all steps, check the current program being used.

If you're using a Hangul Viewer Program instead of Hancom Office, you will only be able to read, not edit. To edit a Hangul report, you need to install Hancom Office Hangul Program.

Case 2: Releasing/Setting Up Distribution Documents for Hangul Reports

Let's learn how to release and set distribution documents in Hangul. It's useful when stronger protection than standard read-only is needed.

What is a Distribution Security Document?

A distribution security document is a Hangul document that requires a password to obtain editing permissions. Unlike general read-only which doesn't have a password set and can be easily released by anyone, distribution security documents have a set password, making release impossible without it. You cannot use any editing menu and can only view its content.

Hangul distribution security documents are essential in public enterprises and schools to prevent unauthorized alterations of Hangul reports.

How to Release Password-Protected Hangul Files

You need a password to edit a Hangul file set as a distribution document.

  1. Open the Hangul document set for distribution.

  2. Click 'Security' in the top menu.

  3. Click 'Uncheck Distribution Document Mode'.

  4. Enter the set password and click the 'Release' button.

  5. You will enter Hangul edit mode and be able to make modifications.

How to Create a Distribution Document from a Hangul Report

This is used when you want to set your created Hangul document to read-only.

  1. Navigate to the 'Security' tab in the top menu of the Hancom Office program.

  2. Click 'Save as Distribution Document'.

  3. Set a password and choose functions like printing and copying restrictions.

  4. Click the 'Save' button.

  5. The file will be saved as a distribution document.

The Hangul file is now uneditable without the password. The recipient can only read and needs the password to make modifications.

Creating a Read-Only Document by Converting to PDF

If you want to make it difficult for the recipient to release the read-only setting, we recommend converting to PDF. Most companies tend to save important Hangul reports as PDFs to prevent edits. Converting to PDF makes it almost impossible to edit, retains the format without distortion, and displays consistently across all devices, making it convenient.

  1. Click the 'File' menu in the Hancom Office program.

  2. Select 'Save as PDF' or 'Export'.

  3. Specify the save location and file name.

Case 3: Recovering Damaged Hangul Documents

If your Hangul document isn't opening due to sudden hwp file damage, you can try multiple sequential recovery methods.

Causes and Symptoms of Hangul File Damage

Hangul files may get damaged due to unexpected power cut-offs while saving a report, software incompatibilities, virus infections, or network transmission errors.

With file damage, attempting to open the file gives an error message saying the file cannot be opened, or it opens with contents displayed incorrectly. In the file list, the file size may show as 0KB.

Complete recovery might be difficult depending upon the extent of the damage, but various methods can be attempted for Hangul file recovery.

Recovering Hangul Documents Using Temporary Auto-Save Files

The Hangul program has an 'auto-save' feature enabled by default. If this feature is on, even if the file was not saved, temporary saved files can be used to attempt Hangul file recovery.

  1. Click the icon at the top right in the Hangul program.

  2. Click 'Hangul Info'.

  5. Open explorer and paste the copied path.

  6. Look for files with the ASV extension.

  7. Open the ASV file by double-clicking as with an HWP file.

  8. Review the recovered content and save it with a different name.

  5. Review the restored content, download, and save it.

Case 4: Resolving Hangul File Corruption | 3-Minute Unicode Error Fix

While opening a Hangul file in a Windows environment, you may encounter corruption issues in the Hangul file.

English and numbers display correctly, but Hangul characters appear as question marks (?) or squares (□).

This is due to improper Unicode conversion, which results in characters not being displayed properly.

The file itself isn't damaged, but there's a display error.

What is a Unicode Conversion Error?

Unicode is an international standard designed to consistently represent all characters in computers. A Unicode conversion error occurs when Hangul characters don't display properly and appear as corrupted after a Windows reinstall or changes in the system settings.

Checking Unicode Error via Windows Language Settings

  1. Open Windows settings.

  2. Select 'Time & Language'.

  1. Select the 'Language & Region' menu.

  2. Set 'Country or Region' to Korea.

  3. Reboot the computer after setting.

  4. Reopen the Hangul file to check whether it displays correctly.

Case 6: Recovering Unsaved Hangul Documents

Did you find yourself panicking because your working Hangul document closed unexpectedly?

Let's explore how to recover Hangul files by finding autosaved files.

What is the Hangul Auto-Save Feature?

Most document editors have an auto-save feature, saving files automatically at set intervals even without the user's initiative.

Hancom Office also features an auto-save, ensuring the possibility of recovering unsaved Hangul files.

Hangul auto-saved files are saved with the asv extension, and the default save location is the Temp folder. The default auto-save interval is set to 10 minutes.

Searching for Hangul Auto-Save Files via Explorer

If finding the save path of temporary files is challenging, we recommend using the search function in Explorer.

  1. Go to the local disk C where Hancom Office is installed.

  2. Click the search bar at the top right and enter '.asv'.

  3. Press Enter.

  4. The search begins (time varies based on disk size).

  5. Wait for the green progress bar to fill completely.

  6. Once the file is found, the search is complete.

  7. Double-click the actual ASV file and review its contents.

  8. If the content is as desired, save it.
